SARYBOMB’S CONCEPT ART PORTFOLIO

Senior comic artist; I’ve been working on my self-published comics since 2017, and they can be found on digital format on this same webpage. Currently have 3 physical comics published with Sextories publisher since 2024.

Concept artist; sequential art has helped me improve gesticular, narrative and position challenging concepts. I’m keen to fast strokes that create shapes and ambientation that will be later translated by other teams inside projects.

I’m sharp in easy solutions and can fluently communicate troubles as well as help others with their parts.

When making comics, I like to write my scripts at the same time I make thumbnails, but also creating concept art that will help me position the characters into physical spaces.

I find that scenarios are key to develop a character’s psychology throughout the story. They tell us how well or badly they feel; how empty, flooded with emotions, excited, scared, etc., they feel. The environment complements and eulogizes the characters. They are the basis of creativity of the world we make for the reader/player.

The protagonist of “From the Dark Throne” is a villain overlord who, on the contrary to the flamboyant persona he shows when against the heroes, is a very lonely creature
The castle he lives in must show that: the walls are made of cold stone, there’s barely any light, and the few things he does have are golden and expensive; but dead. He lives in his own cage and only interacts with the world throughout a cristal ball.

It was very important then to make a big contrast with the antagonists, the heroes.
Their home is a lovely cottage house, with warm lights. It’s full of props -each character still has their own interests- and it’s usually disorganized. With 4 people living in it, it would be weird if it was always clean!

The heroes live in the actual world and interact with it. It’s messy, it’s not classy at all… but it’s alive.

The backgrounds carry the differences between the characters and how they navigate the world and different landscapes as the story progresses.

In order to create less natural spaces, for example room interiors, I design top down maps and textures that will help position the characters.

The backgrounds of “The 13th Ball” were created in order to be oversaturated with textures, props and contrast.

The story follows a group of workers playing pool. The billiard table is simple, an only tone of green, so in contrast the stablishment needed to be full of life. The characters are colorful like the pool game balls; another prop who takes the protagonism of the reader.

When brainstorming for this fantasy world, it was important to have distinguished areas and natural borders. A big part of the story was how isolated the species were from each other, so I put that into canvas.

For the final version, I detailed geographical elements and marked how the earth’s natural heights would separate biomes. Part of the warm and cold zones are influenced by winds, ocean and volcanic movement and haze.

When it was time to expand the idea to an orthographic projection, I transmited my ideas to the supervisor, who gave me some insights on how to continue my work.

The final version that was used in-game.

Exploring biomes took us some time, since script and cartography were hand in hand.

For example; I created paths, towns and biomes while also working with the script manager. Some pieces of information were crutial for both of us in order to work on our part. We had a clear and open communication of what we wanted, brainstorming not only spaces, but also how these last ones would affect the aesthetic of the game.

Backgrounds and spaces are some personal favorites of mine to design. Now that we had a narrative that not only would explain itself with dialogues, but also with landscapes, it was time to work on the look the final game would have.

For the following weeks, I worked on the concepts for the side scroll with what I already had. I made sure to communicate ideas with the pixel art team who would translate my artwork into the finished background meant for the game.
